Dear readers,
This Diwali, as we light lamps to brighten our homes and hearts, let us also reflect on the roads we travel every day. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India witnessed over 480,000 road crashes in 2023, claiming nearly 173,000 lives—young adults, children, pedestrians, and two-wheeler users among the most affected. Each number is not just a statistic; it is a life extinguished, a family’s celebration darkened.
If Diwali is about light overcoming darkness, then this is also a moment for policymakers, stakeholders, and all of us to let responsibility and accountability shine through in how we care for our roads. In 2023 alone, 5,840 crashes were linked to potholes, reminding us of the opportunity to work together toward safer, well-maintained roads. A Viksit Bharat cannot exist without a Surakshit Bharat, where every journey is safe and every life valued.
This requires more than intent. It requires political will, stronger laws, smarter enforcement, and a road safety action plan backed by clear accountability. Frameworks like SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and targeted) can guide state and national action, turning promises into measurable impact.
This festive season, India’s roads deserve the same light, care, and responsibility that we celebrate in our homes.
Wishing you a joyous and safe Diwali,
Road Safety Network
