A study by CAG finds more than 90% non-compliance in wearing seatbelts by frontseat passengers and helmets by pillionriders in two districts of Tamil Nadu

CAG assessed the helmet and seatbelt law compliance through an elaborate study recently this year in two focus districts of Tamil Nadu viz. Thiruvarur and Tirunelveli. 10 locations in each district were selected mindful of their geographical spread, daily traffic volumes and road categories (main arterialroads, sub-arterial roads and State Highways). Compliance surveys were then conducted during morning and evening peak hours on weekdays.

The findings reveal that Tirunelveli district witnesses a higher average of drivers(45%) adhering to wearing helmets and seatbelts when compared to Thiruvarur which accounts for only 28% compliance among drivers. Both the districts show an acute lack of compliance in terms of pillion riders wearing helmets and passengers wearing seat belts. With this as one of the key markers of the roadsafety scenario in these districts,CAG is engaging with the District Road Safety Committees to organize capacity building workshops and help alleviate roadsafety risks.
