With only five fatalities in as many accidents in January this year, Chandigarh witnessed more than 50% dip in deaths in road mishaps in the first month of the year despite foggy weather. In the previous three years, the city witnessed 11 road fatalities each year in January, after having peaked at 17 in 2016. The dip this year is also considerable when seen in context with the number of deaths in December 2019, which stood at 14. Traffic police had attributed the spike in road fatalities in December to dense fog. However, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials confirmed that there were more days with dense fog in January as compared to December, with visibility dropping below 25 metres on many of these days, especially in the mornings.”
